Intrappolati (Entrapment)

Indigenous clay, candles, 5 life-size figures

This piece was inspired by a visit to Pompeii, a site where people were similarly trapped when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. For my solo exhibition, the figures were dramatically illuminated at night by 70 candles.

My inspiration has come both from the ancient world and the natural world. A visit to Pompeii served as a catalyst for a piece that combined images from ancient art with a specific site. The piece was composed of five life size clay figures placed in an Etruscan stone cistern illuminated by candlelight. This work, located in the countryside near Cortona, Italy, is entitled "Intrappollati!" The piece was not kiln fired and as the clay decomposes it will become part of the natural landscape.
