Fragmentation of Hera
5' X 8' X 3' (1999)
Greek stoneware, oxides, terra sigillata, installation
This altar is a celebration of the Greek Goddess, Hera and the creative female power that she engendered.
In the summer of 1999 at the School of the Agean, on the island of Samos, I learned that after the 8th Century BC Hera's powers were fragmented and divided among several goddesses. A historian at the Athen’s archeological museum stated, “This was probably because as Greek culture became more patriarchal, religious authorities did not want Hera to be as powerful as Zeus.”
